The Walnut Speak Easy was named for the slang term “speakeasy,” which was an establishment in the Prohibition Era that illegally sold alcohol. Because of this theme, the venue is modeled after some of the best bars of the 1930s and 40s. Established in 1965, The Walnut Speakeasy is conveniently located in downtown Elgin. Their venue is modeled after the finest bars and city grills of the 1930s and 40s. Owner Alex Matsas insisted upon the most painstaking details to bring you the look and feel of the old days. Even the bricks are authentic; they were removed from demolished buildings originally built in the Prohibition Era.
The Walnut Speak Easy has a mix of American and Greek cuisine. They’re open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and they have a wide selection of craft beers. The Beer Connoisseur Club allows members to save on their amazing selection of craft beers. Spend $10 to join, and you’ll receive a Beer Connoisseur wearable and get every 6th beer free.
