The town may be small in population, but it is large in reputation. If you’re looking for things to do this weekend, view a list of gaming locations in this neighborhood.
Hebron’s first settlers claimed the land in 1836. They built their homes and the community slowly began to grow. On Sunday afternoons it was customary to sing songs, one of which was ‘Old Hebron.’ The town’s name originated from this Christian tune, making this the only instance that a McHenry County town name was given by a woman. This isn’t the only monumental occurrence in Hebron though. In 1952, the town took home the Illinois State Championship title for high school basketball.
The title would be exciting for anyone, but it was especially exciting for a school that only had 98 students enrolled. The team faced a school that had a town population of 44,000 people. The team’s coach, Russ Ahearn, a previous semi-professional baseball player, knew how to coach a sports team. A long running joke on the team was that in order for players to take the sport seriously, they were prohibited from dating aside from Saturday nights.
