The phrase “Gin Mill” originated in the 1860’s as a slang term for a saloon, neighborhood bar, or tavern. The Gin Mill in McHenry is located inside of a historical building that was built more than 100 years ago. While the building has functioned mainly as a bar over time, it was formerly an ice cream shop and even had a filling station at one point. When Trish Rivas bought the building May 1st, 2014, she gutted the interior, raised the ceilings and worked diligently to renovate and upgrade the location while maintaining its historical integrity. The Gin Mill opened for business July 15th, 2014.
Since it’s grand opening, The Gin Mill has lived up to its name as a friendly neighborhood bar with a hometown feel to it. Often referred to as a dive bar or biker bar, the modernized sunlit, rustic, and wooden interior creates a cozy atmosphere, and their welcoming staff treats all guests, frequent and new, like family. With an intimate staff of few, they offer their guests a unique familiarity, where folks know one another by name, and bartenders always remember their visitors drinks of choice.
Not only do they provide their guests with a quality shot and a beer, they offer multiple forms of entertainment, as well as delicious Gregorio’s frozen pizza. Home to five video gaming machines, a dart board, pool table, outside deck, and large parking lot that doubles as a patio, The Gin Mill accommodates for everyone. They also throw a great party of their own, hosting Karaoke every Thursday and Saturday, as well as a number of bike runs and charity events throughout the year. The Gin Mill is a favorite spot for locals to throw their birthday parties, and other social gatherings.
If you’re looking for a great hideout off the beaten path to have a cold one and make some new friends, The Gin Mill is the place for you!
