El Barrio is one of the most popular Mexican restaurants in both Mundelein and the Chicagoland area. This is due, in large part, to their storied history which dates all the way back to 1876 when the great grandmother of the Arebalo family was born in Monterey, Mexico. The recipes she created are the solid foundation upon which El Barrio is built, and they have remained the same for five generations.
Everything at El Barrio’s is completely authentic, including the décor and furniture. The dining room chairs were hand-carved by Mexican artisans, and the décor has been specifically designed to bring Mexico to their guests. Each dish on the menu is homemade; the Arebalos hand-roll every enchilada and squeeze limes by hand.
In addition to the authentic recipes, El Barrio also has quite the expansive menu. Offering both lunch and dinner, their menu can satisfy any appetite. The Carne Asada, “charbroiled skirt steak served with rice, beans, avocado, and potatoes,” is both filling and delicious. If you’re looking for a lighter option, they offer items a-la-carte. The Tostadas are said to be just as delicious as the Carne Asada, but not quite as filling. If you’re in the mood for authentic Mexican, but you’d prefer to eat at home, check out their awesome carry-out menu.
El Barrio also offers a full-service bar that has a wide variety of different tequilas and Mexican beers. Their cocktails are mixed perfectly, and they have tasty margaritas and daiquiris. If you’re interested in a tequila tasting, details are available upon request so they can cater to you specifically. El Barrio also has five video gaming machines offering their guests a chance to get lucky in addition to the great food, drink, and service provided.
