Broken Oar

Why You Should Visit

The Broken Oar Marina & Grill is on seven riverfront acres with some of the most scenic views available on the lower Fox River. Because of the gorgeous scenery, Broken Oar isn’t just a hit destination amongst locals, rather, it attracts folks from all over the midwest. Established in 1904, Broken Oar is popular for its scenery as well as its history. Today, three generations of patrons frequent Broken Oar, and their unique history can be heard through customers’ stories and experiences.

In 1985, Mike and Bonnie Haber took over Broken Oar, and they’ve worked hard to make it the great place it is today, and ensure every guests’ visit is an experience. Bonnie and Mike can be found at Broken Oar on a regular basis, working alongside their staff. At Broken Oar, both staff and customers are considered family to the Habers, and there’s nothing more important to them than pleasing their family.

Broken Oar has the largest beer garden in McHenry, a spacious skydeck, full-service marina, panoramic views, a full menu, and the oar stage and party tent, which is one of their main attractions. Broken Oar’s live music is known for showcasing great bands on their stage during the warmer months. Broken Oar hosts the Annual Fox River Shiver every March to benefit Lurie Children’s Hospital. During this event, spectators watch the participants (dressed in costume) jump into the icy Fox River. They also host Susan B. Komen’s Hooter Shooter with bikini-clad participants snowmobiling and collecting money for the cause.

If you’re interested in having your next event at Broken Oar Marina & Grill, they can more than accommodate you. They host and cater weddings, reunions, and other private parties. Nothing goes with an event better than great food and beautiful views. They host annual events for the public as well. Oartoberfest Weekend features the best German fare and beer around, and it takes place the last week of September. The Turkey Ball is held the night before Thanksgiving and features some of the best bands in the area.
