Woodstock is a large town in northern Illinois with a population of around 25,000 residents. There is plenty of history and charm held in this small city. The town was first named Centerville because of its central location in McHenry county. In 1845, however, the town’s president decided that their home needed a more distinctive name. Despite its lack of originality, the town was renamed Woodstock, after the president’s hometown of Woodstock, Vermont.
In 1852, the Village of Woodstock was incorporated. Later, in 1873 after the end of the Civil War, Woodstock was incorporated as its own city. A significant accomplishment for this growing city was the expansion of the railway to and from Chicago, creating accessibility for people to occupy the land, as well as more business opportunities. To this day, Woodstock continues to develop its city stature, while maintaining its small-town feel. Some very notable movies were filmed on the streets of Woodstock including “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles,” starring Steve Martin and John Candy, as well as the film “Groundhog Day,” starring Bill Murry. In 2007, the town was named one of the nation’s Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
